Hartland Road Dump

Trails are laid out like ski runs - green dot, blue square, and black diamond. There are clear trail markers within the system so you can keep your bearings.
Even when the lot is full you're unlikely to see another rider on the trail system unless you want to.
Organ Donor and Birth Control among others will test the experts while there are plenty of intermediate trails and fireroads. Remeber that an intermediate trail becomes a "black diamond" when its wet.
From Victoria go north on West Saanich Road. Turn left on Hartland road and continue to the end of the road (city landfill).
Immediately before the entrance to the landfill is, on the right, a parking lot for up to 50 cars with washroom and bikehose, and, on the left, the trailhead. Proceeding in from the trailhead about 50 yds. there is an open area with a covered map kiosk and a picnic table. Read the map - maps can be obtained at any bike shop in the area.
Summary: NICE SYSTEM OF STUFF. TOO MANY LITTLE KIDS THOUGH. BE READY TO MEET UP WITH ABOUT 200 12 YEAR OLD POSERS WHO SHOULD BE AT THEIR BABYSITTERS INSTEAD OF RIDING THE TRAILS GETTING IN MY WAY. WHAT CAN I SAY, I AM AN AMAZING RIDER AND I HATE KIDS GETTING IN MY WAY.
Recommended Route: THE TOP
Other recommended trails in the same area: NONE, VICTORIA IS DEAD OTHER THAN THIS SYSTEM

Summary: Hartland Dump is an exellent mountain biking domain with many trails to satisfy riders of all expertise. Hartland is one of the most preffered riding areas around Victoria. Many trails like Hoosier Daddy, (a difficult big drop trail), Birth Control and the Swithback, as well as plenty other trails will challange expert riders, while there are plenty of easy to hard trails to satisfy the novice. Most trails can be easily accesed via fireroads, which branch up the mountain to the summit. If you feel like challenging the full fury of the rock- try riding up the right hand fire road to the top non stop, (at the forks in the road keep to the right), keep going up to the summit. If you reach the top on a bright sunny day, it is a beautiful sight, as you can overlook the area and even see the parking lot. Alison Sydor is from Victoria so every once in a while you might catch a glimps of the pro, I have had that chance and she even signed a team photo, of the Volvo/Cannondale team, for me. Once again I highly recommend this area so,if you ever crave the trill of speeding down a fireroad, wheelie dropping a 10 foot drop, flipping head over heels on a knarly loose rock descent, or having your front wheel mercifully fall off while speedind 40 clicks down the fireroads, this place is for you. Maps of the dump can be picked up at local bike shops. The South Island Mountain Bike Society site can be reached at www.simbs.com Enjoy!
Recommended Route: Go north on westsannich road until you come Hartland road, turn left and at the end is the Hartland dump (don't worry the trails are not in the garbage itself all the trails are on a mountain next to it.)
