This is actually a link-up of three trails in the Idaho Peak network of trails. It makes for an excellent loop, offering fast singletrack, mining road and technical singletrack. Ride the easy Galena Trail to the cable car, cross this, then continue to Three Forks. Ride the road to the historic mining town of Sandon and start up the Idaho Peak access road, which starts steep and rocky before easing off on a pleasant packed dirt surface. At the Idaho/Queen Bess junction turn right onto Queen Bess road and follow this for a short distance, keeping an eye out for a trail dropping down to the right. This is a short section of old road and singletrack which links up to the H Road. After a bit of technical riding, begin an amazing, fast and non-technical descent which swoops back down towards the Galena trail near Three Forks. Watch for the switchbacks which really sneak up on you! Eventually you will reach the junction with the Old Sandon Road. If you are cruising it is easy to miss this junction. There is a wooden sign here which will direct you back to New Denver. Follow this singletrack which climbs for a distance then rolls along past some nice technical sections including some fun bridges and rocky rollovers. Eventually the singletrack hooks up with a Forest Service Road which brings you back to the highway at New Denver. This last section of road is smooth, buff and FAST! It is easy to get going a bit too quickly here so use caution and watch for vehicles. A fantastic finish to a great ride. Treat yourself to a coffee (or beer) in New Denver before riding the short bit of hwy back to your vehicle. Total descent is approx. 800 metres.
From the 4-way intersection in New Denver, drive hwy 31A east past a hairpin turn and then turn right onto Denver Siding Road. Follow this to its end at the Galena Trail parking area. Park here.
Summary: Another gem in the Idaho Peak network of trails. Good aerobic workout followed by fantastic descent combining fast singletrack and bits of technical riding. A rolling finish will remind you that your legs are still there after a long non-pedalling downhill. Lots of fun!
Recommended Route: The Galena/H Road/Old Sandon Road link-up is the best way to do this ride, but if you are feeling tired after the H Road descent you can skip the Old Sandon trail and follow Galena Trail back to your car. Just continue past the H Road/Old Sandon junction to the Galena and turn left. This eliminates the climbing on Old Sandon and is a fun, easy swoop to finish.
Other recommended trails in the same area: The Idaho Peak area has great riding. Not too many duds in this network. Standouts are the North Ridge (epic), Alamo/Choices linkup and Wakefield.
