Trail 7 - Athabasca River Trail

For Shorter Loop - Follow 7e until it hooks up to 7. Easy 4 kms through beautiful pine forests - quite a few hikers. Then a few kms. of steady uphill climb to Maligne Canyon. At Maligne Canyon take 7h (if not wet) awesome downhill, technical areas for a couple kms. Back on 7 easy riding to 6th bridge. Last few kms to Jasper Park Lodge are dusty and rooty - nothing challenging. Intermediate due to long uphill climb and steep decent from the canyon.

Summary:
This is a great morning or evening training ride for those hot summer days. I spend a week or so in Jasper every summer and use this trail to get in shape for the tougher rides in the area. Enough variety, little traffic (in the early mornings or evenings) and nice views particularly on the way back to town along the river. No real technical sections but good for aerobic fitness.

Recommended Route:
For a good workout follow trail 7 in its entirety, counterclockwise from Old Fort Point. You'll get a workout in two sections - a steepish climb just this side of the golfcourse and then again up to the youth hostel just before the start of the Maligne Canyon part of the trail.

For a shorter and easier ride, cut off both climbs by starting at Jasper Park Lodge and cutting across to Maligne Canyon at 5th bridge. This is an easy 50 min training ride and is good to do repeatedly to improve your fitness level.
