Sulphur Springs

This trail is an all-encompassing lung and leg burner. It's got killer ascents up loose-rock and rooty singletrack, then merges into a fireroad climb to the top of the trail. I'ts a loop route so after a brake busting descent you end up where you started. You can take the loop both ways to conquer both sides of the climb and bomb run. The scenery of Kananaskis is unbelievable, so take a lunch and you can chow down before one of the best views I've ever seen! A local bike shop runs a race on this trail every year, so that should give some indication of the toughness of it.

Summary:
While not the uber-ride that cox hill is, this is one of the toughest short loops near Calgary. It's one of my favourite rides, mostly because of the pain and suffering involved.

The best way to do it IMHO, is to ride from Station Flats to the 4-way intersection, go right and do the loop counter-clockwise. It's not straight up right away, but 15 minutes in you'll be looking hard for a spare lung and that extra quad. There are three major climbs. I think the first is the worst, but it's all rideable. The second one is short and steep after the road crossing, then the last one is a real b@$t@rd. It's got loose shale around hairpin switchbacks, and becomes violently steep near the top. The downhill back to the 4-way is just perfect. If you give'r, you'll have to fight to keep your bike on the trail around the blind corners, but that's half the fun. For XC riders, this is a great ride to build your fitness and makes the climb on the Bow race course by Barrier Dam easy.

Recommended Route:
to the 4-way from station flats, then right to do the loop counter-clockwise.

Summary:
The first time I rode this trail I swore I would not do it again. Well I've been back at twice since and plan to go again soon.
It's a good leg burner and the downhill towards the end after the final climb is so rewarding, before you know it, you are back at the car.

Recommended Route:
I just ride out from the parking lot

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Telephone, Tom Snow

Summary:
Very cool little path to take. I see some guys with their DH or big hit bikes on this trail, and I have nothing but respect for them if they can do the whole trail on those behemoths. This trail will work you, I think this trail is perfectly tailored for the XC Rider. You muscle your way to the top of a hill, and rewarded with a nice descent. All that cliimbing and work gets you to the end of Sulphor springs which is accentuated with a series of downhills, smooth, and technical. Very "stimulating" and challenging ride for the intermediate or advanced rider.

Recommended Route:
Park by Diamond T, and do Diamond T first. This will get you a little warmed up before you hit Sulphur springs. Diamond T is pretty easy so don't sweat it. Then you head counter clockwise around the path indicated on all the scattered maps on the trails. You'll eventually work your way back to the parking area thruough a small open field right by highway 22X. Then drive back to Bragg Creek for some lunch.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Try Elbow loop for an all day hike or a good 5 or 6 hour bike ride.

Summary:
THis is one of those trails that has good downhills but seems like all you do is climb, climb and just when you think you are at the top you turn a corner and climb some more. If you want to improve your cardio this is the trail. Also it doesn't take all day to do, has great views. Last week a friend and I got stuck in the middle of a hail storm and were soaked. Everytime I head out to this area I get drenched, but it makes it even more fun, just take a towel or blanket and an extra set of shoes for the ride home otherwise you may spend a little money getting your seats cleaned at Johnny Rockets. This trail is pretty good for all levels it just may take longer and may involve some walking for beginers, don't touch this trail with your downhill bike, dust your hard tail off and take it.

Recommended Route:
I start at the Tom Snow-Sulphur Fork

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Tom Snow is similar (mud), there are a bunch
