Ford Creek

Warning: This is not a popular cyling route you'll see why. If you take the second parking lot the start of this trail is a fun, well groomed, rolling single track (thanks equestrians!) You will leave this trail (stay left, follow signs). Trail then turns up for several km. Many steep elevation gain and losses after the major climb, each trough is a stream crossing. This is the only trail west of the road so no matter you're not lost. Eventually you get spit out at the Powderface road directly across from the Powderface Ridge/ trail connector. Important when you get to the right hand turn take it. Or you go through more "roller grinder" terrain and end on the Prarie Creek connector. The turn takes you down 1.3 km of one of the best descents in the area (I feel) before you hit the road. Warning: this trail trail sees heavy equestrian/ cattle usage and can be badly chewed up in spots. especially on the last 3 stream crossings at the bottom of the descent. Once on the road its a 3 km climb then a screaming fireroad descent. ( Can easily hit 80 km in the big ring, but gravel surface is very loose and drivers tend to swing wide on corners. ) Those of us who did this trail wondered if it may be better starting on the fire road and then doing the trail. I mean REALLY wondering because of that big climb in the middle from the south. No question this is a grunt. Bring food because you will leave behind your lunch.

Summary:
I loved this trail. It is not like the "highways" to the east of the Powderface Road. The climbs are loose, steep and long and require racer style wind and leg power. The descents were loose and rocky, with lots of bumping around. Throw in some superb views of the Rockies and this trail rates 5 out of 5. I would not recommend this trail for the novice. This trail would be appreciated by someone with a MTB racing background and a light bike. Make sure you are prepared for any problems because this trail does not appear to see a lot of traffic.

Recommended Route:
Start the trail from the Ford Creek Loop, enjoy some rough climbs and then descend onto the Ford Creek Trail. Follow the trail until you are finally spit out at the Powderface road.

Summary:
Be fit bring food and water. Plan to be out about 3- 4 hrs. See trail description. Rating is low because of difficulty and the condition of trail when we road it. DO NOT bring out anyone to this ride who is not experienced as a rider, with at least moderate fitness, and who likes to take their bike for the odd walk (at least up). Every descent was ridable for me, but there were two areas on the last third of single track that the rest of the group I was with walked.

Recommended Route:
Like I said in the description we all REALLY< REALLY wonder if this trail woundn't be better starting with the fire road. However we all felt there is no easy route.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Almost any trail to the east of the Powderface fire road.
