Nagarkot - Sankhu Trail
2 reviews
 4.5 of 5

This is the most beautiful trail I have ever ridden in my whole life. Its a 14 Km Downhill, Extreme, Easy Riding, Scenic Trail.very very cool... Some Tips: Be Sure to start early, dont make it too late. Noon is a fine time, but it really gets cold in the evenings. Never go without proper Lights on your bike if you are going on a evening ride. Its best suited to take a CAB from Kathmandu to Nagarkot, would cost you about $10.

Summary:
its a great ride with views from Nagarkot hill station(2014m) of the Himalayan peaks.but to really experience the great trails go with a guide.there are singletracks galore everywhere.be prepared for a 700m climb its brutal!

Recommended Route:
get the hell out of the traffic in Kathmandu by taking the Ring Rd toward the NE part of the city.ask the locals for directions along the way.look for jeep track in sanku leading to Nagarkot.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The Kathmandu Valley has so much riding.lots of hard climbs and great techinical singletracks.but a guide is recommended to fully enjoy it

Summary:
Take a taxi as far as you can go, as it's a long haul up. Then at the last gate (manned by army guys with big knifes & guns), ride to the summit. This is a bit of a hail in itself as the air is a bit thinner than I'm used to. It's a cool view, even across to Mt Everest! Then start right from the top down all the steps you walked up & down the road to approx. half way down. We then diverted off to the right of the road & rode up & then along a range of hills to the SANKHU MONASTRY. The trail to this is all cool, bad condition dirt roads & single track. At the temple are more steps (sweet steep drops) & a great view of Kathmandu Valley. From there is back on to the bad roads, now a sweet downhill in to Baktapur. This town is old & a lot of the streets have slippery red brick. (watch out). Out from there it's cross-country staying very clear of all the main roads. This was a mix of single track, dirt roads, people's back yards & the end of Kathmandu international airport. We then crossed the river and in to the back streets of Kathmandu. This on its own is an adventure of small back alleys, great steps & all the usual man made terrain.
All in all this was an approx. 40km trip, but well worth the great scenery & experience. This is best done with a bike, which has at least front suspension, as the roads are BAD! (which is kinda cool as the worse the road the more fun it is) Tip - Watch the cows & buses. (people would rather run you down than a cow)

Recommended Route:
Taxi to Nargogotsummit, cycle down road to the Buddhist Temple, down through Baktapur, then on the Kathmandu

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The Kathmandu Valley is crossed with trails/single track/roads. So the option are almost endless.
