Cross Country Rider Summary: Stunning water color, great views of ridge after ridge with water everywhere. Secluded beaches and almost rain forest like vegetation linked by a wide single track used mostly by hikers. A few short steep climbs but a lot of traversing along ridge lines. Nothing technical. Recommended Route: Trail is closed to mtn. bikes for peak tramping season. For a one day ride I boated with a rental bike to a place called Portage then road to Anikiwa a distance of about 12 miles. Did trail easily in 2-3 hrs Had time for a warm muffin and visit with some Kiwi riders from Wellington. Time to do half the trail again and meet the boat at 4 for a ride back to Picton. This is one-third of the Queen Charlotte track and an excellent 1 day outing. Boat and bike rental was 96 dollars nz making for a long and enjoyable adventure for the money. Many do the full track that could run from the Picton area all the way to Ship Cove. Probably about 40 miles but lots of lodging options. Everything can be easily set up in Picton-no worries! Other recommended trails in the same area: Complete Queen Charlotte, this area probably has tons of good stuff. This area isn't very populated. The best weather on the South Island, stunning scenery and great transportation systems make this a mtn. bike destination but seems like it mostly gets ridden by the Kiwis who live in Nelson or even Wellington.

, from South Wales - UK Summary: Possibly the best long distance trail I have ridden - though the good weather probably helped a bit. Easily done in 2 days. Punga Cove is a good place to stop overnight. Bit of a long way from the UK but well worth the effort. Ride it and smile. If you still have energy at the end catch the ferry to North Island, travel up to Turangi and have a bash at the 42nd Traverse aswell.
