Mount Paekdusan
3 reviews
 3.33 of 5

The mountain itself is a little sketchy; you can't really ride it without a special permit and a bouquet of flowers; this is, after all, the birthplace of North Korea's leader. The real attraction is the huge network of trails developed in the valleys below this peak. From the interprative center at the base of Paekdusan (near the hotel with the revolving restaurant), ride towards the big fire road entrance that looks to be going around the mountain. Maps are available at the hotel.

Summary:
I've heard all trails on this mountain have been recently closed to riders except for the main paved road leading up to the military base.

Apparently, a bunch of foot hikers logded a complaint to the local district office, the reason largely due to "less courteous" and careless riders who whizz through the trails without a care for hikers. Hence, accidents, destruction of the environment and so on..

There's an ongoing petition to lift this ban but I'm not sure how things will turn out. I suppose at least some of the trails will be opened to riders again.

Hey, are you serious? I'm the webmaster of MTB Korea at www.angelfire.com/ga/achamtb. Please contact me so I can include this ride. I've worked with DPRK before on Baekdu/Changbai issues, and from what I understand, it's impossible to ride in North Korea, or even to travel independently (or at least without two guides/guards that watch you and each other).
