Oirase Bear Trail

This place is made up of numerous small roads and trails so you have to be careful about not getting lost. There is a main road that is gravel in spots and it leads all the way up to the top of the mountain, which by car takes 20-30 minutes, at least.

Trail Directions
I don't know the name of this area so I made the name up. I came up with Oirase Bear Trail because there is a sign once you get onto the trail that warns of bears in the area. I assume that anyone reading this is travelling from Misawa. Take Rt 45 to Towada and follow the signs to Rt 102 and Oirase Gorge. When you get to an intersection with a Shell station on the left you need to turn right and follow that road until you come to another intersection. Here you can either go straight or turn right. Take the right and you should cross a bridge. After you cross the bridge there is a small dirt road to the right that goes down almost to the river. Take this back until you find a place to park and have at it.

I'm a little lost on your directions to this trail, but I think it's the dirt road that turns off the Route 102 by-pass around Oirase Gorge. If so, it's a good climb with a nice long downhill. The time I rode it I saw quite a few cars on the road, which forced you to be a little more cautious. You have a nice view of the river for a good part of the ride. A lot of the singletrack are dead-ends, but that's common in this area. It is a fun ride, nothing technical, but a nice fast downhill.

Recommended Route:
Start at the bottom, climb to the top, then go back down

Other recommended trails in the same area:
There's another trail just before this one on the same side of Oirase Gorge (I have seen a bear and mountain goats on that trail) that's another decent out-and-back, although it's kind of a short ride.
