Mt Stanley Downhill

A 6km downhill MTB track with a vertical drop of 730 metres, the biggest in Oz ! One third is singletrack with the rest fast fire roads. Starts out with a big set of doubles at the top (or ride around them !), followed by fast flowing singletrack, a flatter slower section, then fast singletrack again with 3 big berms, a gnarly, steep set of tight switchbacks and chutes, a log jump (2-3 foot high), rocky singletrack, then a fireroad jump which clears the rd into a berm (easier route around available)....go to the club's website for more information. Let us show you the goods !
Follow the road signs from Beechworth to the township of Stanley. From Stanley it is 8km to Mt Stanley, again signposted from the township. The track starts about 50metres down the 4WD track from the top at the towers and BBQ/picnic area. Look left for a Road Closed sign, the start of the track !
Summary: this trail is absalootly super dooper rad sanialy cool!!!! it is awsome and has got every thing. I live locally and are just so priviledged to be able to ride it! the track has a double at the begining and a really cool rock garden...

Summary: Awesome trail, the infamous rock garden will keep you on your toes as will the water bars on the fire road. Alot of maintenance has been carried out on the lower section and now is not a tyre width goat track, but about 2 foot wide super fast with a few different lines.
Cons: I wish we could put a chair lift in :) Its got a good shuttle road now that ist been graded.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Beechworth MTB park, Mt Beauty

Summary: Time for a more recent review I think ! The track is still in use and in great condition. It is also now recognised by Parks Victoria so is effectively legal to ride. Recent maintenance has improved some dangerous sections below the rock garden and also another 200m of singletrack has been added after the road crossing / berm section. All existing wooden structures have been removed as they were rotting and becoming dangerous.
I rode the trail a few weeks ago and it was in great condition and the most fun ever ! The rock garden is still as challenging as ever and the fire trails have been recently graded.
Get up there and experience one of the longest DH trails with the most vertical drop in Australia !
Recommended Route: Melbourne - Wangaratta - Beechworth - Stanley
Sydney / Canberra - Wodonga - Beechworth - Stanley
Other recommended trails in the same area: Mt Beauty. Beechworth MTB park. Mt Buller (2.5 hrs drive south).

Summary: Never ridden a downhill track before Dec.2000 when I rolled down this one on an old hardtail. One week later I bought my first duallie and 10 weeks later I own 9 inches of fun! Hooked from the first run! Since Dec. I've been to Mt.Beauty, Mystic(Bright), Thredbo, Bon Accord(Hotham) and Buller, all fun, but not as good as this! Would make five stars with a chair lift.
Other recommended trails in the same area: All of the above

Summary: AWESOME track. I have ridden this track eight times in two sessions and it just keeps getting better. This track has the lot!! Fast swooping single track followed by a long series of rocky technical chutes, more single track with a large log jump and the road jump that lands you IN the berm. The track changes to flat out fire track with water bars .. 75km/hr is easy to do ... but hard to stop. Then heaps more single track. This is 6km of FUN. If you're not smiling when you get to the bottom you're clinically dead. This track makes the 1999-2000 Mt Buller downhill track look like a walk in the park. Don't ride this if you aren't confident. This is not a beginners track. Dont ride it alone .. it is a long way to get help if you need it.
Recommended Route: Beechworth - Stanley - Mt Stanley - get on bike on ride to Trail closed sign just over the top of the hill. Track starts at the big doubles.
